Intent Is Not Consent: A Casual Dating Guide

Two people can both want something casual and still have completely different boundaries. Intent helps start the conversation; consent governs what happens next.

Intent is broad

Labels such as casual, drinks or tonight describe a direction, not permission for a specific act.

Consent is specific

Agreement should apply to the particular interaction and can change as circumstances change.

Silence is not agreement

Pressure, intoxication, fear or inability to communicate can invalidate meaningful consent.

Changing your mind is allowed

Either person can stop or change the plan at any time.

Product design should reinforce this

S4N treats intent and consent as separate concepts in copy, matching logic and safety policy.

Remember: Clear intent does not replace consent. If something feels unsafe or coercive, leave the situation and seek appropriate help.
